How to Perform Umrah
Umrah consists of four essential pillars: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, and Halq/Taqsir.
Step-by-Step Rituals
-
Enter the State of Ihram
Before crossing the Miqat boundary, perform Ghusl (ritual bath), wear the Ihram garments (two white unstitched cloths for men, modest clothing for women), and make the intention: 'Labbayk Allahumma 'Umrah' (Here I am O Allah, for Umrah). Begin reciting the Talbiyah.
-
Perform Tawaf
Begin at the Black Stone corner, making a gesture (Istilam) towards it. Walk around the Kaaba seven times anti-clockwise. Men may perform Raml (brisk walking) in the first three circuits. Make dua throughout and end at the Black Stone. Then pray two Rak'ah behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible.
-
Drink Zamzam Water
After completing Tawaf and the two Rak'ah prayer, proceed to drink Zamzam water. Face the Qiblah, say 'Bismillah', and drink in three sips. Make dua as the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Zamzam water is for whatever purpose it is drunk.'
-
Perform Sa'i
Start at Safa by facing the Kaaba, raising hands and making dua. Walk to Marwah (this is one lap). Men should jog between the green markers. At Marwah, face Qiblah and make dua. Complete seven laps, ending at Marwah. Make dua and dhikr throughout.
-
Shave or Trim Hair
After completing Sa'i, men should either shave their entire head (Halq - more rewarding) or trim hair from all parts of the head (Taqsir). Women cut a fingertip length from the ends of their hair. This marks the completion of Umrah and exit from Ihram.
